Conclusion

Conclusion Overall, we learned much about Star Pharmacy on how it operates its dynamic and structured process, and the information systems used for the processes. Based on the information, we were able to identify the sources of issues within the current system and recommend a few changes to the procurement and patient prescription process. Team 5 recommends the implementation of the inventory software, InventoryX, and Med Central website as a collaboration tool for Star Pharmacy to improve the dynamic and structured process. InventoryX database software tool will enable the business to become more profitable and earn more value and the collaboration tool will enable the business to retain more customers through the user-friendly website and complete customer requests more effectively. Acknowledgment First and foremost, I would like to thank Shirley Thomas, the pharmacist in charge, for letting us come to her facility and explain to us how Star Pharmacy manages its business pro...

Recommendations

Structured Process Recommendation Introduction and implementation of a new database software system, InventoryX integrated to ComputerRX Hire a team of software developers for creation of the software They will integrate the software to the ComputerRX system Payment to software developers Multi-user software licensing (all employees are permitted to use software) Star Pharmacy’s owner or MIS manager agrees to the Software License Agreement along with its terms and conditions The business is licensed to use the new software system. Make customizations if necessary (restricted access or full access - depending on employee or job) Cutover method - start using the new software system immediately (permissible for all employees) Everyone must be on the same page when it comes to knowing the ins and outs of InventoryRX to cut down on errors such as excess ordering that leads to dead stock. When switching over to the new software, it is imperative that all employees complete a training program...

Problem Analysis

Problem Analysis Some of the issues identified from the procurement process is that even though the pharmacist executes a batch control by ordering the amount needed based on the customer’s prescription, there is sometimes leftover stock from excess ordering that eventually lead to expired medications that eventually need to be disposed of and to prevent that, our recommendation was to execute a batch control for all inventory to prevent the company from losing potential profit, lower high inventory costs, and for the company to earn back in value. For example, if Metformin Hydrochloride 1000mg is out of stock, the pharmacist orders a batch of 6 or 7, even though there was no patient prescription for this medicine at the time to refill the items out of stock. Even though the expiry for new medications have a longer period, usually 1 to 4 years, eventually over time the items will expire and some of items bought in the past eventually expire quickly as well. Moreover, one bottle o...

Dynamic Process

Image
Dynamic Process Analysis Prescription Fulfillment Dynamic Process - Patient Prescription (Outbound logistics) Star Pharmacy receives 4 different types of prescriptions, in-person prescription paper, where the patient or a relative of the patient comes in and gives the prescription paper from the doctor’s office to the pharmacist. If it is a new patient, the doctor inputs all the patient profile information such as name, date of birth, drug name, phone number, drug interactions, drug allergies, previous medications taken, and insurance coverage. If he or she is not a new patient, the patient file should already exist, the pharmacist will only need to verify if all the information is correct on paper and on the electronic prescription and select it in the system. If there are any issues with insurance billing or coverage, the pharmacist calls the insurance, resolves the issue, and bills the insurance. If insurance was still rejected, the pharmacist will call back the patient, let h...

Structured Process

Image
Structured Process Analysis Procurement (Inbound Logistics) & Inventory Management In order to make sure the procurement process runs smoothly, Star Pharmacy utilizes the WinRx Software from ComputerRX information system for inputting prescription drug inventory and the WinScan software for inventory of over-the-counter products (OTC). Through the WinRx software, the pharmacist is able to place orders from various suppliers, look at the quantity of the drug at hand, cost, and update new inventory through the integrated information system, ComputerRX.  Star Pharmacy’s primary, secondary, and tertiary inventory suppliers are Kinray, McKesson, and Anda sequentially. First, the pharmacist orders the item by searching the NDC number or scanning the item through the WinScan software in the ComputerRX information system and if it is a new item, the pharmacist must input the NDC number, quantity of pills, manufacturer, cost, etc. NDC numbers are significant because the pharmacy ...
